I'm so excited!
I've started another BFL challenge. (I know, you're all yawning. What is this, my 18th one this year?) LOL
But I knew this time was different. I don't know - a switch just flipped from wishing I was doing BFL, wanting to do BFL, trying to do BFL, to absolutely DOING BFL. I even took "Before" pics and made plans and took off running. My official Day 1 was Dec. 8. The thought occurred to me that I should wait until after the holidays, but I was so ready to do it, I couldn't stand to wait another day to start getting more fit. Yeah, sure, I may have a few extra cheat days around Christmas, but I'll sure be a lot healthier come January 1st than I would have been if I hadn't been doing this! :~)
And I've lost 10 lbs this month!! Not just since the 8th, but for a couple weeks before Day 1, I was really getting into it and prepping myself for the official challenge. I had a false start on the 1st, too, and I lost 3 of those pounds that week.
Anyway, wish me luck! :) Someday soon, I will take a pic like the one below, only it will be REAL! :D LOL

I Don't Need To Lose Weight!
I don't know what I've been thinking. I thought I was overweight, but I was just looking at the pictures my husband took of me in Cabo San Lucas and I look so smokin' good! Take a look:

Okay, you got me. That's not a real picture. :D I did this up in Corel Photo-Paint as a motivational thing. Believe me, editing a picture like this and making it look even a little bit real is HARD! (Click on the pic to see a larger version and tell me I didn't do an awesome job! And that's the first time I've used that program! I've done some picture editing in Photoshop, but nothing like this.)
I've been listening to this self-hypnosis CD to try and curb the emotional eating - I used a self-hypnosis type program to have natural births and nurses, doctors, midwives, et. al. were in shock and awe at how easy my births were. So, I'm hoping this helps. It's seemed to be helping some already.
Anyway, one of the things he says it to visualize a picture of yourself looking fit and trim. "The New You." I have a terrible time visualizing things sometimes, so I thought if I could make an actual picture of myself looking the way I want to look, then I'd have something to visualize!
I'll report back on how it's working.

I feel a little silly saying this, but....
I'm going to try again.
I don't know if anyone reads this blog anymore. If you do, stop in and say hi. If not, I'm going to use this as my personal BFL journal.
Day 1, Take 32. And, Action!
I just can't find the magic. When I did BFL last summer (2007), it was GAME ON. I swear I didn't miss a workout. I didn't cheat on my diet. Ever. And I was losing weight, my measurements were going down, I was getting stronger and faster, I was showing improvement in my pictures, and I felt awesome.
So, what was my secret? If I knew, I could make a bazillion dollars, I'm sure.
Well, here goes nothing. Hopefully not /nothing/, actually. Maybe I should say, Well, here goes something.

Holy Hannah Montana!
That sprinting I did on Saturday just about did me in. I ran for literally just under 2 minutes, and I'm more sore than I usually get after any kind of a workout, weights or running. My ribcage aches every time I cough, my legs are killing me in every place there's even the smallest muscle.... I think I need to sprint more often, but I'm also terrified to do it again.

Breaking it up
I decided to shake things up a little bit today and push myself as hard as I can go for a short burst of time, instead of doing the same old 2 miles or 5K or whatever. So, I went to the park and marked off 100 Meters on the path, and did a few 100 meter dashes.
At the end of the 4th one, I felt everything kind of give out. I tried to rest and stretch and do a 5th, but I just didn't have it in me. So I ran another one at my regular 6-7 mph pace, and walked home.
My best time was 0:19:42 and my high speed for the day was 13.2 mph. I feel like, if I really push myself to the max every once in a while, it'll help me get faster. I was thinking about my 5K last week, and how much faster everyone else was than me. Pretty much the only people who came in behind me were some people who never run, who just came for the fun of it. That wouldn't have bothered me if it weren't for the fact that I've been trying so hard lately.
Maybe I'm just "not a runner," like I hear a lot of people say. But I'm not going to give up yet. I've only been doing this for a relatively short period of my life, so I'm going to keep on and see what I can do if I really push myself.

5K
I did it in about 35:50 or so. By my watch, it was 3.14, which is a little bit more than a 5K. I didn't feel totally right when I started out, though. I'm not sure what was wrong. I did just start a detox yesterday, and I felt like that might have been part of it. It's part of my excuse, in any case. :D I also had to stop and walk a couple of times because of a sideache.
I pushed myself to keep going for a long time. (Keep going to the corner. You can stop and walk once you get to the corner!) LOL. At one point, I had planned to stop and walk once I hit the 1/2 way mark, but that was where everyone was sitting, timing and cheering, so I pushed myself to go around to the next corner so everyone wouldn't see me stop and walk. :D But there's only so far I can push myself before I cry Uncle.
Anyway, my time still wasn't too bad. My first 5K last year was somewhere in the 43 minute range, and my best 5K was something like 32 minutes. So, I could have done better, but I've also done worse. :)

I left my old record in the dust
I just ran outside today instead of running on the treadmill. I wanted to push myself outside and see how fast I could do a mile. I'm going to run the neighborhood 5K tomorrow and I thought this would be a good exercise.
I love the treadmill for being able to plug in what speed I want to go and have the treadmill push me to keep up, but I also knew it held me back at the same time, when I would have gone faster if it wasn't still at the same speed.
So, I went on my run with a GPS watch, and I told myself I wouldn't let my speed drop below 6 mph, since that's the 10-min mile pace. So every time I glanced at it and saw that I was below 6, I'd push myself a little harder until it was back up there.
Honestly, I didn't think I'd be able to hold that pace out for the whole mile, but not only did I hold it, but I even had a little bit left in me to make a push the last .1 mile or so, and I was at about 7.5 mph when I "crossed the finish line".
So . . . drumroll, please . . . I did it in 9:26! I'm so proud of myself. :) We'll see what I can do the 5K in tomorrow. :D

My First 10 Minute Mile
I ran a 10 minute mile today.
One thing that's great about running on the treadmill is that you can actually dial in the speed you want to run at and hit a goal if you can just keep up with the treadmill.
I made a plan to run a 10 minute mile this morning, so I worked it out on paper what speeds I'd have to run to make it. Since 6 mph is the average speed you have to run at to run a mile in 10 minutes, I knew I had to run as much over 6 mph as I did under. So here was my program:
(The first number is the minute and the second number is the mph I ran during that minute of the run)
1--5
2--5.5
3--6
4--6.5
5--7
6--5
7--5.5
8--6
9--6.5
10--7
I'm not very good at pacing myself when I run outside, and this way, I can push myself to run harder and get in better shape faster. I do need to run outside more, though, if I want to compete in races, because I'm going to have to learn to pace myself and push myself harder when I run outside.

I want to ride my bicycle
I want to ride my bicycle
I want to ride my bike.
I want to ride my bicycle
I want to ride it where I like!
I wanted to post a YouTube video of the Queen song "Bicycle Race" to go along with this post, but I am totally shocked at what I found out there. I haven't heard this song in a long time, and I was a naive kid when I did hear it, but there is some really offensive stuff in there. And then the actual Queen music video has scores of naked women riding bicycles in it. Yuck! So, now that I've given you a full visual, I might as well have just posted it on here.
Anyway, back to what I was going to say. My knee has been bothering me really bad the last few days. I was hoping it would be better in time to do my run yesterday and my lower body workout today, but it wasn't. So Jaron suggested I dust my bike off and try that for a while.
So, I spent all morning changing the tires out on my bike and doing all this work to it. I was so stinkin' proud of myself for doing all that stuff by myself! But then it came time to ride the dumb thing and it won't go. The brakes are totally out of whack and one side of the rim of each tire is practically glued to the brake pad. So, I have to wait for Jaron to have time to tune it up. Blech. Oh, well, it was too hot to bike this afternoon anyway. I just really wanted to and I was bummed when I couldn't go.
I've been singing that Queen song for the last hour or so. :)
I'll let you all know how biking stacks up to running as far as cardio workouts go. Lindsay, what's your take on it, now that you've trained for and ran a Triathlon? Anyone else have experience with both biking and running who can give some insight or advice?

The Key to Motivation
I think I've found one of the biggest keys to motivation, at least for me. It can be summed up in one word: Competition.
The first time I did BFL, I think one of the things that kept me on track so faithfully was the thought of entering the competition. I didn't want to be a slouch. I wanted to be the best. There was money at stake. And no matter how little I thought my chances were of winning, there was always that chance that I could win if I worked my booty off.
Well, for some reason that wasn't working for me this time, but just the other day, I decided to throw down the gauntlet. I challenged my husband to a BFL showdown. So now, even when he isn't following the plan, I don't have a desire to just give in and eat ice cream with him or whatever, because if I don't give in, I'm winning. :D
My pants haven't been fitting lately and I decided I really need to crack the whip. The thought of having to dig in the basement for a bigger size of pants killed me. (They're in the box with my maternity clothes, by the way. It's a psychological deterrent.)
So there you go. I'm determined to kick dear hubby's butt. :D We'll see what happens.

Does this count?
I have spent the last few days trying to rip the weeds and grass out of my neglected vegetable garden.
Seriously, when we moved in here two years ago, the previous owners left us a beautiful garden, well maintained, with veggies growing on the vine, literally. We didn't even pick all those veggies before they went to waste, and I haven't touched that garden since.
I keep wanting to plant a garden, and meaning to plant a garden, and having all the good intentions in the world, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. It was too much work, and I didn't know where to start.
Which is why the entire thing was completely overgrown with grass and weeds. The weeds are actually pretty easy to deal with. Wet the soil, go at it with a little claw or shovel or whatever, and they slide out, roots and all.
The grass is another story. The roots are, like, three inches deep, thick, and a royal pain in the butt. I've literally been going after them with a pickaxe and I am just about wasted.
So, my question is, can I count this as my workout? :) It doesn't target all the right muscles, it isn't a perfect interval workout or anything, but it does actually work me out pretty good, and I'm sore afterwards, and it's pretty aerobic, too. So is it okay that I haven't been doing regulation BFL workouts? Can I still count this week as good? :)

This is so Inspiring!
I've seen this billboard along I-15, but didn't know the full story until now.
After hearing this story, I don't think I can ever say, "I can't do that" again.
This man has run ironman triathlons with his disabled son in tow, pulling and pushing him along, so there's no reason I can't do a 10K, triathlon, or whatever I decide I want to do.

I'm so out of shape!
I just ran today and I pushed myself really hard, but I can't run nearly as fast as I could just a couple of months ago. It's not like I totally quit all this time, either. I've been running, but not on a strict schedule. It took me 39 minutes to run 3 miles, and I was running 3.1 miles (5K) in 33 minutes in March. I guess it's not /that/ different, but it just feels like I'm going to die running 6 mph, and that used to be close to my average speed.
Anyway, I'm going to be in awesome shape again really soon!!! :D Probably in better shape than I was then, even. Because I'm not giving up this time. :)

Day 1, For Real
I know, I know, I keep saying I'm starting over and I can't quite get my engines going.
But this time, it's for real. I'm not just trying to do it. I took "before" pictures last night, I printed off today's spreadsheets, I did a real upper-body workout, I made a meal plan, and I'm sticking to it.
We're having a big family reunion in September and all the in-laws are coming from around the country. It's exactly 90 days away, and this is just that little bit of extra motivation I need to really do it this time.
So, wish me luck. I'll check back in soon and let you know how it's going.

My Non-Progress
Okay, so now that I know a few of you are still out there...
I'm not doing well still. I can't seem to find any willpower, motivation, etc. My cravings are incredible. Ugh!
So, what's the solution? I don't know, honestly. Any words of encouragement? Help? I did so great last year when I did this. I don't know what my problem is. Actually, I've been lacking in motivation in lots of things lately.
I think I just need to go back to square one. The thing that really kicked me in the butt last year was the thought of actually making a big 12-week push and entering the contest. I was completely prepared to do that and I made really great progress. Maybe I need to take some new "before" pictures and really go for it.
I just weighed myself this morning and I'm back up to where I was when I started. :/
So, anyway, watch for more progress reports coming up in the near future. I'm going to really do it this time.
Good luck to all of you, too! Keep me posted on your progress.
Lindsay, how is your training for the triathlon going? Good luck with that!

I feel like singing...
I feel like singing Pink Floyd's song, "Comfortably Numb" - at least, the first few lines:
Hello (hello, hello)
Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me.
Is there anyone home?
Hello (hello, hello)
Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me.

Week 1, Take 3
Well, I'm back from my vacation and I'm a few pounds over what I was when I started BFL the last time. *sigh* But I knew that would happen. They feed you like kings on the cruise and then we spent another several days eating out every meal while we were staying in CA.
In any case, Jaron and I are planning to start over again on Monday. Well, okay, I'll admit the truth. Jaron is planning to start over again on Monday. Unfortunately, I'm not that excited about it. I just really like to eat. :-P I'm going to have to figure out more ways to eat healthy and still get a good variety of tastes and be able to feel satisfied, etc.
Anyway, what's up with all of you? I see nobody's posted in a while. Is everyone still sticking to the plan? Floundering? Holding steady? Losing weight?

Feelin' Pretty Discouraged...
Hey everyone (that is, if anyone still checks this blog! ha ha) - I have a question...
So, I'm on like day thirty-something of this program and the scale is barely moving. I've been the same weight for like three weeks!!! I've had a few people in my family tell me they can see a bit of a difference, but I just get bummed when I check the scale and see the same numbers. I know that muscle weighs more and so I may be evening out how much bodyfat I'm losing to how much muscle I'm gaining, so that I just stay neutral. Is this actually common? Is there a point where this stops and I start seeing progress on the scale?
I'm just putting this all out there because I'm getting pretty discouraged - yeah, I could be more strict about the eating plan, but I'm definitely not doing that bad on it. And I've only missed two workouts. It's hard because I've got these goals that I'd like to meet by certain dates, but I feel like I'm just wasting my time. Grrrrrr...WHAT'S UP?!?!
Thanks for letting me vent.

And I've only missed two workouts. It's hard because I've got these goals that I'd like to meet by certain dates, but I feel like I'm just wasting my time. Grrrrrr...WHAT'S UP?!?!
Thanks for letting me vent.

Feel Great in 8 Fitness Program
The Clifton's are doing a program. I'm not really sure how it works in terms of how you sign up, when they're starting, etc. But from what I heard, it's an 8 week program where you give yourself points for healthy eating, exercise, and other kinds of behaviors.
You can see more at their website. I thought I'd throw it out there and I'll post more details when I know them.

Biggest loser contest
My friend is hosting a biggest loser contest. She's done this 3 times before, and I've competed (and not won) each time. But its very motivating. This past time the pot is $650 - and the winner takes ALL of it! So, if anyone is interested, you can either let me or her know.

Still Plugging Along...
I'm still doing the program - really good on the exercise, pretty good on the eating. I have to echo what Heather Savage was complaining about - the scale just really isn't moving that much for me. I know that building muscle makes it all even out so that there's not much loss on the scale, but it's still de-motivating to look at the scale and see basically the same numbers for the past couple weeks. Grrrrr!!! But I do feel stronger, my endurance during cardio has gone up, and I am using heavier weights for some of the exercises. So, I'm still plugging along!
I'm kinda excited about this thing called Wii Fit coming out. Has anyone else heard of it? It's pretty cool - I'm thinking of getting it when it comes out next month. Finally, I'll actually use the Wii (not just Kevin's toy!). Here's a video if you're interested: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/30038.html

Neighborhood 5K
I was just talking to John Kirkman yesterday and he said they are organizing a 5K run / walk on Memorial Day. I don't have any details yet, such a time and place, but he said it would be in the morning and that it's free. So, no ugly T-shirt with ads plastered all over it given out at the end of the race.
So, anyway, I just wanted to give you a heads-up on that. Pass the word on to anyone you know who might be interested in running. I'll post more details when I know them.

Don't hate...
Today I got on the scale thinking, crap...I've probably gained all my weight back. I've had about 4 paradises' at Chili's in 2 weeks, eaten out almost everyday this week, eaten like crap and missed working out two days...I'm not looking forward to what the scale is about to say.......................................................................................................................I've lost a total of 7 lbs!
My lowest weight yet! Yes I am stoked and no, I have no clue how that happened. I tell ya, I now believe in miracles.

WHY?
- Why-Can't I get past the 10 lb mark?
- Why-Do I get side aches?
- Why-Do I need to like fatty foods?
- Why-Is it so hard to remember to drink water?
- Why-Can't I just be at the weight I want to be?
- I'm still doing BFL but just not really seeing any changes it SUCKS!

Reporting In
I stink.
Okay, that's not exactly true. But it's so hard to stick to a meal plan! A big part of my problem yesterday was that I took all my kids to the store when it was too close to a meal. I should have known better, but I thought I could be home pretty quick. Wrong! As soon as I got home, I started gorging myself on anything and everything I could find.
I did get somewhat back on track later in the day, though, although I never did actually make the dinner I had planned. I ran out of time and just made scrambled eggs and ham instead.
And then I had a bowl of choc-colossal crunch at the end of the day. Oops.
So, basically, my meal plan is the same today as it was yesterday, since I never did actually eat those meals yesterday. :D Sometime, the humiliation of having to come on here and report what I've been eating will motivate me to start sticking to my meal plans better. I hope. :)

I almost died on the treadmill this morning
I pushed myself harder than I've ever pushed myself before because I was just determined to break 2 miles in 20 minutes. And I almost did it! I just barely missed it by a few hundredths. It's amazing how much harder you have to push yourself just to go .1 mile farther. :/
I felt a sideache coming on halfway through my run and I just pushed through it. It's also "that time of the month," and I haven't been feeling 100%, so I feel really good about breaking my record today.
As for my diet, I did pretty well on the whole yesterday. It wasn't anything to write home about or anything, and I messed up meal #3 because I let too much time go between meals, and it was getting too close to dinnertime to sneak in that meal, so I snacked instead. And I ate a FHE treat last night. And instead of ants on a log, I had a bowl of cereal. :/ But on the whole, pretty good.
So, for today:
Meal #1 - Fruit and Protein Shake
Meal #2 - Chicken Salad Pita
Meal #3 - Salmon and Yogurt
Meal #4 - Eating for Life p. 162 - Herbed Chicken
Meal #5 - Apple, Protein Drink, and Ants on a Log
Meal #6 - Zone bar (if I can't hold out until bedtime)

Is it just me?
I'm going to venture a guess that the reason people aren't posting is because the diets aren't going so hot?? I know that's the case with me, I haven't gained, but I haven't lost and let's face it
I LOOOOOOVE FOOOOOOOOOD!!!
So congrats to those of you who are still gung ho, I wish I was! And don't try to give me pointers and try and motivate me, I'm just not there yet - not feelin' it...

Weekly Weigh-In
Well, I weighed myself today and it looks like I'm just holding steady. I have to admit I slacked off a little last week - I did all my workouts, but my eating wasn't as good as it can be. I didn't overeat too much, but I definitely wasn't eating six times a day or balancing my carbs and proteins as well as I could have.
Today's my free day (mmmmm.... fattening General Conference breakfast....), but starting tomorrow, I'm going to do a better job planning out my meals the day before. Do you guys all plan and track your daily menu/training on those pages in the back of the book and on the website? If so, do you feel like it makes a difference? I don't really like doing stuff like that, but if it helps, I'll get with it (it probably does - why else would it be in the book!).
How did everyone else do this week?

Weekly Weigh-In
I'm sure this isn't typical, but I lost four pounds this week!! Woo-hoo!!! I'm thinking a lot of it is probably water weight (I drank so much water this week - I went to the bathroom almost as often as I did when I was pregnant!). But, hey, I'll take it anyway! This will definitely help me stay motivated. Anyway, I was just psyched and had to report!
Hope you all have a good week!

Wish me Luck!
Although none of you will probably read this before my race is over, but you can wish me luck in retrospect and that should still work, right? Hopefully. :)
Anyway, my race is tomorrow morning. I ran a practice run outside yesterday to see what I could do outside without the help (or hinderance, as the case may be) of the treadmill. What I hadn't counted on was the fact that the road is much harder than my cushy air-padded treadmill, not to mention having to turn and deal with different grades and variations in the road. So, the long and short of it is, my legs are really sore today. I've had ice on them and I'm going to put a hot pad on them for a little while tonight. Hopefully I'll feel better tomorrow.
The other factor that I'm worried about is the forecast for tomorrow. Cold with a 30% chance of rain. So, I did some research and I feel like I'm mildly prepared to deal with the elements tomorrow.
By the way, my time yesterday was 32:10. :D We'll see how tomorrow's run compares.

I'm running a 5K on Saturday
There are several 5Ks I have my eye on this spring. The first one is on Mar. 29th at UVSC, 8:30 a.m. If you're interested in running with me, you can register here
If you register early, it's only $15, whereas the at-the-door price is $20.

Carb / Protein Combos
Chicken salad pita. I like to take a can of cooked chicken in water, drain it, and stir in a little low-fat mayo and some salt and pepper, and fill up half of a whole wheat pita with it.
Fried egg sandwich. I make fried eggs the same way I do when I'm eating them plain, but then toast a couple pieces of whole wheat bread, put a thin layer of Smart Balance butter on it, and viola! Egg sandwich to the rescue. Sorry, I'm getting corny now.
(by the way, the Smart Balance comes in little tubs in the butter aisle. It's not real butter, but it's also not margarine. It's made out of healthy, Omega 3 and 6 oils.)
That's all I can think of at the moment. Ideas???

Carbs
I have a few carbs I like to use for my snacks throughout the day.
Fruit. One of the best is just a plain, whole piece of fruit. Pears and apples are my favorites.
Yogurt. I buy the fat free yoplait packs.
Whole wheat toast. I like to spread a little bit of apple butter or something on it, but I keep it to a really thin layer.
Oatmeal with raisins. I probably shouldn't put the raisins in to be a true BFL approved carb, but it's so much better with raisins! And it's way better than dousing it in brown sugar.
Rice Cake. There are some really yummy flavors, and they're even better with a thin layer of peanut butter - we don't use anything but the original, trans-fat-free Adams at our house. One trick I've learned is to stir the oil in and then put it in the fridge so the oil never separates out. You only have to stir each jar once. Sweet!
Give me more suggestions, please! :)

Proteins
I have a bad habit of reaching for a protein drink once or twice a day because I just can't think of a protein to add to my carb and I just don't want to try and figure it out.
So I thought I'd let you guys know what some of my favorite protein snacks are and maybe you could all list some of yours.
Costco Salmon Patties. Now, I'm NOT a fish person. But Costco has these hamburger-type patties made of salmon that are actually really good. They come in a bag in the frozen food section and I just pull one out, stick it on the George Foreman for 4-5 minutes, and it's ready to go. Yum.
Eggs. I like to fry a couple of eggs. Sometimes I take one of the yolks out to bring the fat content down. Seriously, I was shocked when I looked online at how much fat is in the yoke compared to the white. So I take the one yolk that's left, pop it, and spread it around in the whites so there's some yummy yolk goodness in every bite.
This is sad, but those are the only two I can really think of that are just protein alone. I'll post another post for carbs and for protein/carb combos. Help me out with your go-to protein ideas.

Myoplex
Quick question: Does everyone drink that Myoplex stuff? Do you have to? Is it expensive? Do you substitute it with something else?
Lost 3 pounds
Somehow this week, I lost 3 pounds. And then I cheated this weekend, so I probably gained it all back. I ate so much junk food yesterday with all the Easter candy lying around. I've got to be good this week, but I'm travelling for work this week, so it may be difficult when I'll be in meetings all day.
How did everyone else do over the holiday weekend?

About to Start...
Hey Everyone!
I think having this blog is such a great way to stay motivated and accountable, so I'm going to give it a go. I'm going to start Monday (I'll have the book finished by then). I'm excited to try it all out. My father-in-law did this program, lost a bunch of weight, and is probably the healthiest person I know now. So I know it works. I think this will be the jump-start I need.
One question to everyone - I'm borrowing my mom's copy of the book, but she bought it when it first came out in 1999. Is there anything new that's been added to it since? Any revisions I should know about that anyone is aware of?
Well, I'm going to ejnoy Easter weekend (but not too much!) and then Monday's the day! I'm so glad we're doing this together!

My week in review
I weighed in today because we are taking a free dinner tonight (Oh man, I'm so excited). I lost half a pound but I am ok with that. When I think of losing weight I like to picture hamburger, hang on, stay with me. Now when you go to the store and buy a pound of hamburger, that's a lot of meat! So when I have something that I can visualize when losing pounds like losing half a pound of hamburger, I'm good. Plus like Jennifer said, it's not likely or realistic to lose more than 2lbs a week. So as long as I lose I'm happy.
The last 2 days have been hard for me. I haven't messed up, I've stayed strictly to the diet, but I keep catching myself fanatsizing about fries and peanut butter sandwiches and such. Also yesterday I cleaned the house for about 5 hours and I JACKED up my back. So today I did not do lower body. I thought squats and lunges would only hurt it further. It is feeling much better so I will be back on with the exercising tomorrow.
And THAT, is my week in review...

It's Official
I'm joining BFL. I know, you are all so excited! After talking it over with Lindsay I agree with her "I can do anything for 12 weeks". Seems this may be the best route to go to kickstart my weightloss. I am sure it will take me longer than 12 weeks to loose 50 pounds, but I'm game. I am ready to go. Now I am off to buy my books so I can prepare over the weekend. I'm starting Monday, can't wait!!

Yes, I ate some cake
Last night was Enrichment and, as it was the R.S. birthday celebration, they had birthday cake at the end.
I didn't eat any of the candy they left on the table during dinner, but I did eat a piece of cake. I scraped out 90% of the frosting, though. Are you proud of me? :/
Friday and Saturday, I'm going to be at a conference literally from sunup to sundown, and I'm planning to bring some healthy snacks and make good choices with the meals they serve, but I'm not going to be able to work out and I'm not going to be able to eat healthy all day.
Then, Sunday is Easter. I'm going to try to eat healthy most of the day, but I don't work out on Sundays and there is all that Easter candy. *sigh* I did well most of this week, though, so it isn't a total wash-up.
I hope everyone else is doing well!

Breakfast Shake
Since I was talking about protein powder below, I thought I'd elaborate on what I use it for.
I've eaten the same breakfast almost every day for the last 6 years, which consists of
- a scoop of protein powder (EAS 100% Whey, Chocolate flavor)
- a few frozen strawberries
- 1/3 - 1/2 of a frozen banana (I peel them, break them into pieces, and freeze them ahead of time because having them frozen makes the shake thicker)
- various other frozen fruits and berries. (I vary it for variety)
- I also throw in a teaspoon or so of fish oil. (I use the lemon flavored variety, but even when I was using various flax and fish oils, you can't really taste it in the shake because there are just so many other flavors in there)
- I put in just enough water to get it to come together in the blender, usually in the neighborhood of 8 oz.
Since it seemed BFL-ish, I just kept that as my breakfast after I started the program.

My reply to Dani...
This started out as a comment, but it got so long, I thought I better just make it a post.
I found the book to be essential, really. I would recommend at least reading it once through before you start.
I find the excel spreadsheets really helpful. You can download them here in either PDF or excel format and print them off. I plan my meals ahead of time with the nutrition one and the exercise one helps me track what exercises I've done for each of the muscle groups and what size weights I used, and whether that was too much or not enough, etc., so I'm more prepared for the next time I work those muscles.
I didn't want to rely on protein bars or drinks, etc., but sometimes, you just don't know what to eat or you don't have time, or you're not home every 3 hours to make a meal, so I end up buying those things for the occasional snack. Right now, we're using Atkins drinks and adding a carb with it, just because that's the kind Jaron got used to when he was doing the Atkins diet years ago (Chocolate Royale is the best flavor if you go that way, but Strawberry is good, too, if you think of it as strawberry milk). I also buy Zone bars because they have the same basic balance of protein and carbs, and I like the flavors they have better (I don't really like their chocolate kinds. I usually buy the fruity kinds). We also buy a protein powder - the EAS 100% Whey, chocolate flavor.
So, that's my thoughts in a nutshell. Okay, so it was the shell of a pretty big nut. :D
Good luck, whatever you decide to do!

Advice
I know twice in one day, oh well.
Alright so I am not, as of right now, doing bfl but I am considering it. My hubby wants to loose weight too, so I think I can get him to join in with me. I need suggestions. Meaning, what supplies do you suggest I have to help me optimize this program? Linds, I think you said the cook book is a must? Any other suggestions? Do you guys do the Myoplex. Do you use the bfl book or the website, I had a bfl book from 8 years ago but I think I threw it out, so I am wondering if I need to get another one. Thanks ladies!

I'm hungry
I'm hungry today. Really hungry. I just ate my 300 calorie lunch and it just ain't cutting it today. I'm eyeing the apple that I brought for my mid-afternoon snack, but if I eat that now I have 6 long hours before I can eat again.
Help! What are some great low-cal snacks that help curb your cravings?
Help! What are some great low-cal snacks that help curb your cravings?
YUM!
I just made myself the best snack!!!! Cantaloupe with fat-free cottage cheese if you have not tried that you must it is delicious!!!!
It all started with a few Jelly Beans...
and it just went downhill from there. SERIOUSLY DOWN HILL. I think I had two and a half peanut butter sandwiches, and then I had my husband go and get The Pie pizza for dinner. Bad, bad I know, and he brought home candy bars, I had two. I also had about a half of a 2 litter bottle of Diet Coke. At least it was diet, but the caffiene kept me up so late, I was too tired to roll my fat #$% out of bed this morning to go to the gym. I am disapointed but I am trying to move on from it today. Starting the day off right... Breakfast is never a problem for me, lunch is even alright. But come 3 or 4 pm (that is a rough part of the day around here) and I start craving and munching.
Why am I posting this? Well, if you had a rough day I'm sure this will make you feel better. And I think somehow I have emotional triggers so I wanted to document my disapointment. Next time I start feeling that way, I will read this and hopefully avoid the morning after regrets!
Don't worry though, I enjoyed enough pizza for all of you!

Mucousless diet
I haven't been doing well on the cleanse. First of all, I haven't stuck to the regimen. I've had a snack here and there. This afternoon, I gave up completely and had a BFL meal. I've gotten sick since starting it (sore throat, etc.) and I'm assuming it has something to do with the fact that my body's releasing toxins?
Stephanie, when you did it for 8 days, did you actually do it all the way - not eating anything else? What was it like for you? Did you get sick or have side effects? Did they go away after being on it for a while? Could you work out while you were on it?

Thank You!
Thank you so much for adding me. Even though I'm not part of the Jordan Meadows gang, I am by association. For those of you that don't know, I am Lindsay's kid sister. I was so excited when she posted about this blog, I had to come check it out. I am not doing bfl but I am trying to loose weight. So far I don't have any tried and true methods. This is just trial and error for me. I want to loose 50 lbs. I think I could be happy after that. After eating at lot less, and a lot heathier than usual this week, I have lost about 2 lbs. But considering that was with no excercise, I will try not to get discouraged yet. I did do weight watchers after my second child and I lost about 20 lbs with that. I am considering going back, but I'm not sure how the meetings would fit into my schedule. I love having someone to be accountable to, not that you guys would hunt me down if I don't stick to this, but it is nice to have support.

Exercise
Since I'm officially a contributor, I guess I'll contribute. I have absolutely no motivation to exercise. I bought an elliptical a few months ago and did it religiously but just gained weight. I gain muscle like a man! Same thing when I did that Bikram Yoga (hot yoga) for 4 months, 3-4 times a week. I gained weight. It's pretty frustrating to work out and have my pants fit tighter. I'm assuming that if I stick with it for a while I'll eventually lose weight, but it's hard to stay motivated.
I have already lost 3 lbs since Wed. Just keeping my calories at about 1350/day.
Motivate me!!!!

Going Private
Some of us are wanting to put our weight up on this blog and not wanting the whole world to see it. So we are going to be making this blog private as of Monday. If you want to be invited, leave your email address in the comments and let us know! Happy losing!
Going on a Cruise
Jaron and I have been talking about going on a cruise this spring and we were looking at cruises last night. It'll be a lot more fun lounging out by the pool in our bathing suits if we lose weight before then, and we have 6 weeks to do it in if we schedule this cruise we have zeroed in on as our dream vacation. :D
Therefore, I have a new motivation to do good over the next 6 weeks on this challenge.
I ran this morning and I took it a lot easier in the beginning and managed to do it without a side ache. I cut back my speeds to where my highest speed was 7.0, but I still ran 1.8 miles in 20 minutes, so that's nothing to sneeze at.
It's great to read all your posts. I'm glad you all wanted to join this blog so we can all motivate each other.
Talking about cleanses, Jaron and I are going to try to do this salt water cleanse, along with this Dr. Christopher cleanse for the next few days and see how it goes. He's done it all before and swears by it, but I'm a little bit nervous. I tried the salt water cleanse once and it wasn't pretty. So, we'll see how it goes. Wish me luck. :/

Body Cleanse
Still motivated
This week has been great so far. I have worked out every morning and eaten right each day. I'm not even DYING for my free day, which is amazing. My weigh in is tomorrow and I am anxious but also not getting my hopes up. I feel thinner, but it has only been 5 days. I'm also still nursing and my weight does not like to bugde when I try and diet while nursing. Well cross your fingers, I hope I've at least lost 1 pound!
Breakfast
Hello everyone!!! Thanks for letting be me apart of this BFL blog! I am always needing support to stay on track and get ideas for food! I have done body for life before and lost a whopping 18 lbs! It was time to start back up again I am tired of feeling tired by 1 p.m. and not having my clothes fit! Rob is also doing this with me thank goodness! I started this on Tuesday so I am day behind everyone else but it's no big deal. I have to say the first day was really hard to get through with no girl scout cookies, oreos and nachos with melted cheese mmmm! I am happy to even say which I know I shouldn't even be doing yet is that I have already lost 5 lbs. One thing thing that I am looking forward to is Saturday!!! WHAT A GREAT DAY that will be... girl scout cookies here I come!!!!!!!
I want to share what I am doing this time on the BFL program. First I made a phone call to Veronica L. you all should know her if not she is a personal trainer and is very healthy. I asked her what I should be taking as far as supplements go and she told me this. I need to get a time release vitamin for women that you take once a day also (ground) Flaxseed it also comes in seeds but she said your body cannot digest those you put that on food or your drinks. For the shake she said to get the Goat Milk Whey one for women at GNC I haven't got that yet but I will take a picture of it when I do. She recommended that I do a body cleanse for a week so I am doing that. I asked her what to do for night snacking cause that is a big problem for me. She said first no sugar after 4 p.m. then at dinner drink a huge glass of water before and after then if you are still hungry make 4 egg whites and should be you full. Here is a picture of my breakfast today 1/2 cup egg beaters with some mushrooms and I sprinkled the Flaxseed on my egg (it was actually good I just forgot to mix it in with the egg) then I took my vitamin and pills for the cleanse. Yes that is a pile of Ketchup I can't eat eggs without that!!! This was a very filling breakfast!

Thanks for letting me join!
Thanks so much for letting me join this blog - even though I'm not following BFL and I've moved out of the ward now (I still work in Lehi though, so I still feel like I belong). But I am following my own diet and exercise program as I try to lose weight. I actually tried BFL a couple of years ago, and I could NOT do it. Those of you who are successful are my heros!!
What I am doing, is trying to follow a 1500 calories per day diet. I limit processed foods and try to eat whole grains and fresh foods. The biggest thing for me is NO sugar - I'm such a sweet-tooth. I also try and drink only water. I do have one day a week where I can splurge, so I guess its like BFL in that way.
My strong point is definitely exercise. Last year I started running by following the Couch to 5k in 9 weeks program. While I'm still a slow runner, I love it! I run 5 days a week, for a total of about 20 miles per week right now. And I'm actually training to run the 1/2 marathon next month at the Salt Lake City Marathon.
So, you're probably wondering why I wanted to join this group, since it already sounds like I have a plan. Well - I need encouragement. I love to eat - and I'm constantly feeling like I"m hungry and depriving myself or I'm splurging and feeling incredibly guilty for it. I also need some good ideas for meals on the run. I don't get home from work until after 6pm, and its so hard to find something healthy for the family when they're all starving by that time of night.
I'm also a slow loser. I've seriously been considering getting my thyroid checked or something, because I feel like I should be losing more weight than I have been. Some days I get so discouraged. Believe it or not, I actually GAINED 3 pounds this week. I'm hoping that its water weight because of my monthly visit from "aunt flo" - that hope is the only thing keeping me from eating everything in sight.
My goal is still to lose 25 more pounds and to get rid of my "muffin top". (Oh how I hate the muffin top).

A New Week 1
Honestly, I wasn't really doing BFL for the last two months. I would make a little effort here and there, but I wasn't really on the program.
Even though DH has been doing it with me, he hasn't really been doing it either. Last summer, we both were doing it and we were both with the program 100%, so we would keep each other going. This time, we were both doing it 20%, so you can see where that goes. :)
So, I decided now that I have this little group, I'm going to call this "Week 1" and really go for it.
I've been doing really well so far this week. My eating has been way better. I took a free meal yesterday for date night and I'll take another free half-day on Sunday. We'll do that for a while and see how it goes.
I'm still getting that pain in my side while running. My back has been messed up lately, so I'm thinking that might be the problem. Maybe a visit to the chiropractor is in order. And this might be a good time to go in for that massage I've been wanting... :D
How's everyone else's week going? I hope you're all doing well. Good luck!

Lower body workout
I just did a lower body workout and I'm afraid I'm gonna be sore tomorrow. It's been a while since I did one.
I agree that you need to write down the food you eat. I make myself write down even if I just lick the ice cream scoop after dishing it up for my kids.
I think it's also important to write down what you're going to eat and when. I haven't been doing meal plans this time around and it's a big part of the reason I'm not doing well with my eating.
So, I'm going to make sure and make a meal plan and then stick to it! :)
Hope you're all having a great day.

TheDailyPlate.com
Vennessa Distefano guided me to a fabulous website that counts your daily calories, TheDailyPlate.com. All you have to do is sign up (you don't have to pay or be a member) and you can enter in your weight and what you want to lose and it will calculate how many calories you should be eating in order to lose. You can put in what you've eaten for the day and it will track your calories for you. It's a great website. I think writing down what you are eating each day is something that is motivating, because I don't want to have to write down any crap food I ate. So far so good (ok, it's only been 2 days, but hey...)
Edit to note: If you do decide to sign up for the daily plate and want to share your screen name leave a comment here and tell us what your screen name is. We can keep track of each other on there as well. If you'd like to add me, my screen name is AchtungBaby.

BFL Recipe
OK, I don't know how many of you have the BFL cookbook, I personally think it is a must have with this diet. But if you don't, I made this recipe for dinner out of the cookbook (pg. 289) and it was fab! Very filling, in fact Daren and I both felt like it was a little indulgent it was so good.
1lb lean ground turkey
1 can chili beans in chili sauce
5 cups romaine lettuce chopped
1 cup salsa
1/2 cup reduced fat cheddar cheese, shredded
1 tomato diced
4 green onions, sliced
1/2 cup light sour cream
4 oz baked tortilla chips
I didn't follow the recipe to a "T". I put taco seasoning in with the ground turkey, and I just eyed the lettuce to what seemed like a good amount. (seriously, how bad could a bunch of lettuce be?) I put on about 2/3 a cup of turkey mixture on top, about 1/4 cup of salsa, about a TBS of shredded cheese (yes, reduced fat), about 1/4 cup of light sour cream (naughty, I know, I LOVE sour cream) and I crushed about 3 tortilla chips over the top. It was yum and it's 8:45 and I'm still full. Thought I'd share.

Treadmill
I actually love the BFL treadmill program. I've really been pushing myself on it. The reason I haven't done it the last couple times is that I started getting this weird side pain that radiates up into my shoulder partway into my run, so I have to slow my pace down. To make up for it, I decided to run a longer distance.
Anyway, what I do is print off the excel spreadsheet for the cardio routine and I write in the mph I'm planning to run for each minute of the workout.
For instance, here is the breakdown of the last time I ran:
Then every time I run, I look at the speeds on my last sheet and bump up a couple of them to try and push myself to the next level. I heard someone say once that you try to make yesterday's "10" be today's "9".
Basically, it's the feel-like-you're-going-to-die workout where you cough and sputter and wheeze for five minutes after you're done and it takes an hour before your face isn't flaming red anymore. :P
Anyway, I don't know if that helps or not, but it's the way I do it at least. :)

Great idea Jennifer. I love that we can support each other and that we can be accountable for our behavior on this diet!
I have followed the diet, eaten healthy and exercised this morning. I just did the old body for life treadmill run, which I have questions about. I feel like it is too short and not very effective? Anyone else? I just don't feel like I get enough out of it and I'm contemplating doing my own treadmill routine...thoughts?

I need some motivation!
I've been trying to do my second BFL challenge since the beginning of the year or so, but I keep falling off the horse!
I thought maybe having a dedicated BFL blog might help me stay motivated.
I worked out today - Ran a 5K in 35:15 on the treadmill.
As far as diet goes, I haven't eaten badly, but I haven't eaten well either. Basically, a protein drink and a bite of my daughter's cookie. Hmmm.
I better go have a healthy meal.
